Activating and updating the firmware on Trezor hardware crypto wallet
Let’s get started. Connect Trezor to your computer with a micro USB cable. Go to the Trezor website, choose our wallet model. The site displays a video demonstration of what the original hologram should look like. Click “Continue” to continue your computer’s interaction with the wallet.
The next step is to install Trezor Bridge. Choose your operating system from the list and download the installer. Run it and install the program. After that, refresh the page in your browser.
The wallet interface automatically detects the connected Trezor. For security purposes, a new Trezor always comes without firmware. To install it, click the “Install firmware” button.
Then disconnect and reconnect the Trezor. When the firmware is updated, it will automatically update your device’s bootloader. This ensures that if a third party program was installed on your device, it will be overwritten by the original software.
Connecting Trezor again. This time, click “Create new” to create a new wallet. Trezor generates a new unique sig that forms the master key to access all of our wallets. You will see a notification that another firmware update is available, and we click “Show details”.
We disconnect Trezor again and plug it in by holding down both buttons on the device at the same time to get into bootloader mode. We check the box confirming that we have everything we need to recover and click “Update”.
Now right click on Trezor to confirm that we want to update the firmware. Compare the digital imprint of the firmware on the Trezor screen. If they match, right click again.
Connect the device twice more: first to install the new firmware, then to install the bootloader. Press “Backup”, set the checkbox, press “Continue” and the device screen shows 24 words of the phrase to restore seed. Write them down.
After you have written all 24 words, Trezor shows them again so that we can check the correct spelling and order of the words. Then we set the numeric PIN to protect against unauthorized physical access.
To set the PIN, you must confirm the action on your Trezor by pressing the right button. Setting the PIN is done by pressing the keys on the virtual keyboard, the numbers of which are displayed on the Trezor screen.
Now give our device a name, which will be shown on its display. This will simplify identification and allow you to distinguish our Trezor from someone else’s. The maximum length of a name is 16 characters. After you enter a new name for your device, you must confirm it on the Trezor by pressing the right button.
Add the wallet web interface page to bookmarks to get rid of the site search through Google and possible transfer to a phishing site.
Congratulations, our Trezor is now fully set up and safe to use.
